JOHANNES MUNCK LECTURE 2025
Michal Beth Dinkler, Yale Divinity School and Yale University.
What kind of worlds does a narrative text construct? How do narratives attempt to position their readers? What rhetorical effects might emerge from a narrative’s temporal, focal, and ethical forms? This lecture revisits the Acts of the Apostles through the lens of postclassical narrative theory, particularly developments in contemporary narratologies that emphasize cognitive processing, un-natural narration, and the ethics of storytelling. Focusing on the literary form of Acts, I will argue that by attending to the many ways that narrative forms create meaning – and the many ways that they also fall short – we can deepen our exegetical attentiveness to New Testament narratives and to the stories we are all now living.
